An Overview of Course Tutoring

Suggestions for Faculty with Course Tutors

What is a course tutor?

A course tutor is a writing center tutor who assists a particular class. Just like a regular writing center tutor, your course tutor offers free tutoring for your writing assignments. During a tutoring conference, your tutor will usually ask questions in order to discuss your ideas for your paper. As a course tutor, she understands your writing assignments in the context of the course. Your course tutor is not involved with the grading of assignments. Tutoring sessions are conducted in the Writing Center, located on the ground floor of McCain Library.

What does she do?

A course tutor participates in class discussions and reads the same material you read for your course. She does not have special knowledge of the subject of the course. She will work closely with your instructor in order to learn the writing expectation of the course. During the course of the semester, she can discuss general writing trends of the course with the instructor. At the request of the instructor, she can also give presentations on different aspects of the writing process. She will also set aside special hours each week when she only offers tutoring for students in the class.

Who can be tutored?

Anyone! Writers of all levels of ability can benefit from a conference. So even if you are the next Faulkner, come visit us.

What should I bring to the tutoring session?

Bring anything relating to the course. Whether you are on your third draft of a research paper or need to brainstorm for a close reading, come see us. We’ll talk with you during any point of the writing process.

How can I sign up for a conference with my course tutor?

Your course tutor will post a special sign up sheet for your course on the bulletin board outside of the Writing Center. This sheet will be underneath the big purple sign up sheet. Please sign up 24 hours in advance and be sure to include your first and last name and extension.

If you need to cancel, please call the Writing Center at X6242.
